Shaking it up with Shakespeare

Surprise always ensues when people discover I have never read William Shakespeare. Their reaction usually follows with the question: Didn’t you read Romeo and Juliet in high school?

To which I always respond: No.

Yes, it was on the agenda, but my freshman English class was out-of-hand and my poor teacher spent too much time disciplining behavior, so we simply ran out of time for this tragic love story.

I got my first taste of Shakespeare this week when I took on The Tempest for my Senior Seminar.

My overall impression is that it’s not my favorite book.

The plot is simple enough: a storm, a shipwreck, lots of explanation and a final confrontation, all mixed in with fairy tale aspects of magic, marriage and menace.

However, I’ve never been interested in fantasy or science fiction stories, so I wasn’t quite as excited by Shakespeare as I thought I would be. In addition, I found the explanatory notes on the left page of the book distracting. Admittedly, it took me to reach page 30 before I realized I could understand the text without them.

The Tempest wasn’t a hard read, but it was difficult making myself interested in the book, as I knew I’d have to write about it later for class. The best part of this experience is that the next time someone asks if I’ve read Shakespeare, I can confidently respond yes!

Free Pizza Friday

What is better than free food? Winning a voucher for free food and then enjoying it, of course!

Last week, my suitemate Monica played the game “Um, Ah, or Like” on Star 92.9, the only radio station that streams clearly in my room. The name of the game is to talk about the random topic the DJs choose for 20 seconds without saying “um,” “ah,” or “like.”

This was the second time this school year that she’d won, so I decided to try my luck.

The very next day, Monica called in and handed me her phone. The call went through. That day’s topic was to talk about “my favorite TV show.” I started rambling about The Big Bang Theory, the first show to pop into my mind. Because I was half asleep, I stumbled to get my words out — but long story short — I won! (It also happened to be the first time I won a radio contest!)

Monica and I won the same prize: two lift tickets to Mad River Glen, 2 movie passes, and a 20 dollar gift voucher to Zachary’s Pizza, Pasta, Subs & Fun.

Today we went to Zachary’s. It was my first time there and our first suitemate “date night,” as she preferred to call our adventure.

We only wanted to spend one of our vouchers, so we took a lot of time deciding what we wanted to eat that would get our total bill closest to 20 dollars without going over.

We finally decided on garlic knots as an appetizer. They were delicious and drowning in a tasty garlic sauce. For our main course, we chose to split a sausage calzone. Unfortunately, we forgot to photograph the calzone, but I can assure you we enjoyed it!

At the end of the night, when our waitress gave us the bill, we were shocked at how close we had come to spending the entire 20 dollars. You really can’t get any closer than $19.98!

Our suitemate bonding dinner gave us the perfect opportunity to chat about the new semester, since we’re so busy and don’t get to see each other often, and I got to try a new eatery ALL FOR FREE!

First Time Friday: Check

On the first weekend back on campus for the Fall 2013 semester, my suitemates exclaimed in unison at the fact that I’d never been to Panera. Their surprise only grew when they learned I’d never been to a wedding, worn plaid or skipped a class.

This is how my concept of First Time Fridays was born. Last semester — all 15 weeks — I successfully challenged myself to try something new every Friday.

This semester, I plan on continuing the challenge, but with a small twist. Instead of limiting myself to just one day of the week, I’ll try something new any day, and then post an update on this blog. I’m still going to call it First Time Friday, even if it’s something I did on Wednesday or Saturday.

My First Time Friday this week is starting my own blog. Stay tuned to find out what I try this upcoming week!
